Songye - African Kifwebe Mask - Congo
Tribal art from the Songye people of Central and Southern Dem Rep. Of Congo. The Kifwebe masks embody supernatural forces and are used to ward off disaster and threats. It is used to mark important periods of social transition and transformation, appearing at the death of a chief or any other eminent person, or when a person assumes an important political title. It also had the capacity to heal.
